Trials of Valentine's Day
The 14th of February. A day for the celebration of love and relationships, posting about your loved ones on social media, buying them flowers, writing cards, posting some more pictures, photo shoots, more pictures, who can get the best present? Sometimes I think in this day in age people forget what the true meaning of Valentine's Day is. Love and appreciation.
Every year without fail, the first person (and usually the only person who am I kidding) to say Happy Valentine's Day to me is my Mum, sometimes followed by a passive aggressive 'because no one else is going to say it to you', thanks Mum I LOVE your faith in my relationships. But thinking about it, saying Happy Valentine's Day to my mum is exactly what the day is all about. Showing appreciation and thanks to those around you that make a true impact on your life, whether that's just your mum or your dad.
But this Valentine's Day I'm dedicating it to me (sorry Mum). Self-love is hard to come by in a world that's swamped with comparing yourself to other people and their lives. I think we all forget that what we see on social media is a painted picture of someone's life, a tiny snippet of 'reality'. People may look like their life is perfect but reality check!!!!! it's probably not. I'm guilty of this 100%, making myself feel bad because I compare my life to theirs, their relationship and their Valentine's Day. But today isn't the day to go around wishing that it was you getting those flowers the guy just bought in the shop or watching videos on instagram of heart balloons tied to sausage dogs wishing that was your Thursday night.
Go buy yourself those roses that you want, put them in a pretty vase and appreciate what you've achieved. Tell those around you Happy Valentine's Day and how much you're thankful for them, even if that's just your friends, or your parents. And at the end of the day, you'll feel so much better that your life isn't the same as everyone else's.
My Valentine's night is going to consist of me, my single-friends (you're getting smaller in number by the minute), pizza and probably a night out filled with dancing on benches and that's ok! Every Valentine's Day is different and mine is probably going to finish in the takeaway with my one true love mozzarella dippers.
